The Life on a Leaf residence in Hirvensalo, Turku, is an artistic and architectural masterpiece designed by Jan-Erik Andersson together with architect Erkki Pitkäranta. The residence is intended for Finnish or international artists and researchers whose work focuses on urban spaces or urban environments.

During a residency here, one can devote oneself to art research, architecture, urban planning, urban research, cultural research, etc. The house is not suitable for e.g. painters, but the house has great acoustics and concerts are organized continuously. The residence is best suited for artistic computer work. The Life on a Leaf residence provides an experience not found elsewhere in the world, the unique environment is the basic idea the residence offers its resident artists.

The residence, the leaf-shaped house Life on a Leaf, was built in 2009 and is run by the association Life on a Leaf rf, which aims to conduct and promote collaboration between art, architecture, academic research and economy with an urban environment characterized by imagination and creativity as the goal. Currently, the residency has an Open Call. The residency takes 1-2 artists at the same time.

The house has three floors, each with a different style and atmosphere. The building is located in a scenic area where the idea is not to cultivate anything but instead let nature flourish and naturally grow wild. There are over ten apple trees in the yard, a rich insect life and a variety of beautiful flowers. It is a deer sanctuary so they are welcome to eat anything they want. Jan-Erik and his wife live on the yard in a house formed as a spruce. The farm also has a sauna shaped like an onion and a building in the shape of a bluebell.

The house is full of painted ornamentation and not suitable for small children. The house and its interior are a total work of art where, apart from the two private rooms for the artists-in-residence, there is no opportunity to display their art. Life on a Leaf also organizes guided tours for external groups and the house will be shown in its original state. Universities are free to hold seminars and idea days in the building.

The Life on a Leaf building, courtyard and environment are culturally important to preserve for future generations. During Konstrundan, the special residence opens its doors to the public to familiarize themselves with the place that combines art and architecture.
